How to start a TikTok Shop in the US
A clear, beginner-friendly walkthrough of opening a TikTok Shop in the US: who can sell, the documents to prepare, the signup steps, how listings work, how payouts settle, and the tax and compliance basics you are responsible for.
This guide takes you from nothing to a live TikTok Shop in the US. It assumes you have never sold online before. Read it once end to end, then gather your documents before you start the application, because a clean first submission is the fastest path to approval.
Before you begin
Approval is mostly identity verification and document matching. The most common cause of delay is details that do not line up across your ID, your bank account, and your tax information. Align those first and the rest moves quickly.
Who can sell
TikTok Shop US is open to sellers based in the United States who can verify their identity and provide a US bank account. You register in one of two ways.
- Individual or sole proprietorship: you sell as yourself, using your personal identity and tax details. This is the simplest way for a first-time seller to start.
- Corporation or partnership: you sell as a registered business using your EIN and supporting registration documents, with a business bank account.
You must be at least 18 and reside in the US. If you are not sure which path fits, start as an individual or sole proprietorship. You can run a real shop that way and form a business entity later when your sales make the extra structure worthwhile.
Documents to prepare
Have these ready before you open the application. Uploads must be valid, unexpired, clear, full images that match your registration details. Accepted file types are typically JPG, PNG, JPEG, or PDF, and files should be under the platform size limit.
If you register as an individual or sole proprietorship
- A valid US government-issued photo ID: a US passport, driver license, or state ID.
- Your legal name, date of birth, and US residential address.
- Your SSN or ITIN for tax purposes.
- A US bank account in your name for payouts.
- A W-9 form for tax reporting.
If you register as a corporation or partnership
- Your legal business name and EIN.
- Supporting business registration documentation.
- Ultimate beneficial owner information for the people who own or control the business.
- A valid US photo ID for each business owner and the business representative: US passport or passport card, US driver license, state ID, or permanent resident card.
- A US business bank account in the business name.
Match your bank and tax details
Payouts go to a US bank account, and your tax information must match the identity you register under. Lining up the name on your ID, the name on your bank account, and the name on your tax form before you apply prevents the most common holdups.
Create your shop, step by step
- 1Go to the TikTok Shop US seller registration site (seller-us.tiktok.com) and sign in with your TikTok account, or create one if you do not have it.
- 2Choose your seller type: individual or sole proprietorship, or corporation or partnership.
- 3Enter your details. For individuals, that is your legal name, date of birth, and US address. For businesses, enter your legal business name and EIN.
- 4Upload your ID document and complete the identity check, including any required address validation.
- 5Add your US bank account for payouts and confirm the account name matches the seller.
- 6Add your warehouse or return address so the platform knows where orders ship from and where returns go.
- 7Submit your application for review. Many US-based sellers are approved within roughly one to two business days.
- 8Once approved, set your shop name, link your TikTok account so you can post and tag products, and you are ready to list.
Listing your first products
A listing is a product page with images, a title, a description, a price, and stock. The best listings are honest and specific. They tell a buyer exactly what they are getting.
- Use clear images on a clean background, plus a few that show the product in real use.
- Write a plain title that names the product and its main feature. Avoid keyword stuffing.
- Set the correct product category. The category affects which referral fee rate applies to your sales.
- Enter accurate stock counts and pricing. If you sell variants such as sizes or colors, add them as options on one listing.
- Fill in any required safety or compliance fields for your product type before you publish.
Price with fees in mind
Set your price knowing that the referral fee, any affiliate commission you offer, fulfillment, withdrawal fees, and your product cost all come out of the sale. Skimmr exists to show you the real number left after all of that, so you list at a price that actually clears a profit.
How payouts work
You are not paid the instant an order is placed. Funds settle after the order is delivered and a holding window passes, then they are released to your linked US bank account.
- TikTok uses settlement windows that depend on your account standing, so newer or flagged accounts wait longer than established ones.
- After funds settle, a bank transfer typically takes a few more business days to clear into your account.
- Withdrawals can carry a small fee depending on the method you use, so factor that in when you plan cash flow.
- Refunds and returns are deducted from what you are owed, so your payout reflects net sales, not gross orders.
Tax and compliance, in plain language
Compliance keeps your shop open and your buyers safe. Here is what a US seller actually needs to track.
- Tax documents and thresholds: you can usually start listing and selling before submitting full tax documents, but once your sales pass the platform's reporting threshold you must provide them to keep selling and to receive payouts. The threshold can change, so check the current requirement in Seller Center.
- Sales tax: depending on where you and your buyers are, sales tax obligations can apply. In many cases the marketplace handles collection, but you remain responsible for understanding your own obligations.
- Product safety: your products must meet US safety rules for their type. Some categories require specific documentation before you can list.
- Prohibited items: some product categories are restricted or banned on the platform. Check the prohibited products list before you source stock so you do not buy inventory you cannot sell.
- Accurate records: keep your identity, tax, and bank details current and matching. Automated checks flag mismatches quickly.
If you are unsure about tax
Sales tax and income reporting depend on your state, your structure, and your volume. If you are growing or selling across state lines, a short conversation with an accountant is worth it. This guide is a starting map, not tax advice.
Your first week
- 1Get verified and your shop name set.
- 2List two or three products you can describe honestly and fulfill reliably.
- 3Confirm your prices clear a profit after every fee, not just after product cost.
- 4Post content that tags your products so people can buy without leaving the app.
- 5Watch your first orders settle so you understand the real payout timing for your account.
Start small and learn the mechanics on a few products before you expand your catalog. The sellers who last are the ones who know their true margin on every item, which is exactly the number Skimmr is built to surface.
Put this to work on your own numbers.
