How to start a TikTok Shop in the UK
A clear, beginner-friendly walkthrough of opening a TikTok Shop in the UK: who can sell, the documents to prepare, the signup steps, how listings work, how payouts arrive, and the compliance basics you are responsible for.
This guide takes you from nothing to a live TikTok Shop in the UK. It assumes you have never sold online before. Read it once end to end, then prepare your documents before you start the application, because a clean first submission is the fastest route to approval.
Before you begin
Approval is mostly an identity and document-matching exercise. The single biggest cause of delay is information that does not match across your ID, your bank account, and any business records. Get those aligned first and the rest is straightforward.
Who can sell
TikTok Shop UK is open to people based in the UK who can verify their identity and supply a UK bank account. You can register in one of two ways.
- Individual or sole trader: you sell as yourself. You do not need a registered company. This is the simplest starting point for most first-time sellers.
- Business: you sell as a registered entity such as a limited company or LLP. You register using your details from Companies House and a business bank account in the company name.
You must be at least 18. If you are unsure which path fits you, start as an individual or sole trader. You can operate properly that way and move to a company structure later once your sales justify the extra admin.
Documents to prepare
Gather these before you open the application. Photos or scans should be clear, in full frame, and unedited.
If you register as an individual or sole trader
- A valid government-issued photo ID: a UK passport or a UK driving licence.
- Your National Insurance number.
- A UK bank account in your name for payouts.
- A UK address you can be reached at. PO boxes are generally not accepted.
If you register as a business
- Your company details exactly as they appear at Companies House: legal company name, registration number, and incorporation date.
- Official business documentation such as a certificate of incorporation showing the legal name, address, business type, and tax identifier.
- A government-issued photo ID for the legal representative or director who completes verification.
- A UK business bank account in the company's legal name.
- A valid physical UK business address. PO boxes are generally not accepted.
Match your bank name carefully
Payouts go to a UK bank account, and the account name must match the seller it pays. If your bank statement shows a shortened form such as Ltd where your registration says Limited, it still needs to clearly resolve to the same entity. Sort this before you apply.
Create your shop, step by step
- 1Go to the TikTok Shop UK seller registration site (seller-uk.tiktok.com) and sign in with your TikTok account, or create one if you do not have it.
- 2Choose your seller type: individual or sole trader, or business.
- 3Enter your details. For individuals, that is your legal name, date of birth, and address. For businesses, enter your company name, registration number, and incorporation date exactly as held at Companies House.
- 4Upload your ID document and complete the identity check. This usually includes a facial verification step, so have your face and your physical ID to hand.
- 5Add your UK bank account for payouts and confirm the account name matches the seller.
- 6Add your warehouse or return address so the platform knows where orders ship from and where returns go.
- 7Submit for review and wait for verification. This commonly takes one to three working days, and longer if anything is unclear or does not match.
- 8Once approved, set your shop name, link your TikTok account so you can post and tag products, and you are ready to list.
Listing your first products
A listing is a product page with images, a title, a description, a price, and stock. Good listings are honest and specific. They tell a buyer exactly what they are getting.
- Use clear images on a clean background, plus a few that show the product in real use.
- Write a plain title that names the product and its key feature. Avoid keyword stuffing.
- Set the correct product category. The category affects which platform commission rate applies to your sales.
- Enter accurate stock counts and pricing. If you sell variants such as sizes or colours, add them as options on one listing.
- Fill in any required safety or compliance fields for your product type before you publish.
Price with fees in mind
Set your price knowing that platform commission, any affiliate commission you offer, shipping, and your product cost all come out of the sale. Skimmr exists to show you the real number left after all of that, so you list at a price that actually clears a profit.
How payouts work
You do not get paid the moment an order is placed. Funds settle after the order is confirmed and the return window has had time to pass, then they are released to your linked UK bank account.
- Payouts are released on a regular schedule, commonly weekly, into your UK bank account.
- After a payout is released, it typically takes a few working days to land in your account.
- Your first payout can take longer than later ones while your account settles in.
- Refunds and returns are deducted from what you are owed, so your payout reflects net sales, not gross orders.
Compliance, in plain language
Compliance is not paperwork for its own sake. It is the set of rules that keep your shop open and your buyers safe. Here is what a UK seller actually needs to track.
- VAT: if your taxable turnover crosses the UK VAT registration threshold, or you expect to cross it within the coming year, you must register for VAT and provide your VAT number to TikTok. Missing this can lead to your listings being suspended. The threshold can change, so check the current HMRC figure.
- Product safety: your products must meet UK safety rules for their type. Certain categories require specific documentation or a designated responsible person, and selling into Northern Ireland and the EU brings additional product safety obligations.
- Prohibited items: some product categories are restricted or banned on the platform. Check the prohibited products list before you source stock so you do not invest in something you cannot sell.
- Accurate records: keep your business, tax, and bank details current and matching. Automated checks flag mismatches quickly.
If you are unsure about tax
VAT and self-assessment rules depend on your turnover and structure. If you are close to a threshold or selling across borders, a short conversation with an accountant is worth it. This guide is a starting map, not tax advice.
Your first week
- 1Get verified and your shop name set.
- 2List two or three products you can describe honestly and fulfil reliably.
- 3Confirm your prices clear a profit after every fee, not just after product cost.
- 4Post content that tags your products so people can buy without leaving the app.
- 5Watch your first orders settle so you understand the real payout timing for your account.
Start small and learn the mechanics on a few products before you scale your catalogue. The sellers who last are the ones who know their true margin on every item, which is exactly the number Skimmr is built to surface.
Put this to work on your own numbers.
